Picotte Leads Mid-Pack at Laguna World Superbike (1995)

This photo shows how deep the field was. It was a mid-pack battle with Pascal Picotte (No. 121), on the Muzzy Kawasaki, leading German Jochen Schmid (No. 20) on a factory Kawasaki, Team Kawasaki Italy’s Piergiorgio Bontempi (No. 8), Gianmaria Liverani (No. 28) on the Team Gattolone Ducati, and Brit John Reynolds on the No. 33 Revé Racing Kawasaki. Picotte scored a 15th and 10th in the two races. (Alan Sessarego photo)

Another great photo from the archives of photographer Alan Sessarego. This is from the amazing Laguna Seca World Superbike event in 1995.

It was the debut of World Superbike at Laguna and the field was arguably the deepest in the history of World Superbike. In addition to WSBK regulars such as Carl Fogarty, Troy Corser, Anthony Gobert, Aaron Slight, Colin Edwards, Yasutomo Nagai and Simon Crafar, Laguna featured the top AMA Superbike riders at a time when the series was solid from top to bottom. Miguel Duhamel, Freddie Spencer, Pascal Picotte, Tom Kipp, Mike Smith, Mike Hale and Tiger Sohwa were just a few of the AMA stars entered in the race.

A strong crowd of over 30,000 showed up to watch the World Superbike regulars versus the AMA Superbike racers for the first time in four years (since the 1991 Brainerd World Superbike event). The race weekend saw Australians Anthony Gobert and Troy Corser trade wins. AMA riders were well represented. Smokin’ Joe’s Honda’s Miguel Duhamel and Mike Hale both scored podium finishes.
