Kayo Racing at IRP (1988)

Kayo Racing was one of the nation’s leading endurance racing teams during the late 1980s. This is a photo of Kayo leading Scott Zampach on an unknown endurance squad at Indianapolis Raceway Park circa 1988. I don’t know who the rider is in this photo. I felt sort of bad about that until I sent the photo to team member Ken Welty. He said he couldn’t be sure because “all the team riders had the same leathers and Arai helmet, so gloves & boots are all I can go by. I would guess it to be Mark Heiser, but can’t be sure. The late Jim Tribou also rode that day and I cannot remember if anyone else rode there or not.” I will update when we find out for sure who was leading Zampach in this photo.

  1. Did the Z-man ever race with the Dreyer team? I think they ran a red GSXR750 in ’88, but I would have expected it to run number 593, not 204.

  2. It looks like Donnie Rowe to me with his riding style. This is the year after “Revvin” Kevin Rentzell and I rode the GSXR-1100 in the GTO class while Rowe and Sloan rode the 87 Championship Winning Kayo Racing CBR600 Hurricane to the AMA/CCS Motoworld Endurance Championship. Donnie Rowe and Tommy Sloan were the primary riders of the team in 88 riding the FZ1000 and graduating from the GTU category to the GTO class.

  3. My bike, at the WERA fall End. National. I know the late Jim Tribou & Mark Heiser rode, but not sure (at this moment,) who the 3rd rider was. Could also be Donnie Rowe, Jeff Dean, or Tommy Sloan. (I’ll look it up.)
Tough day, as I remember it. Tires were not working, sponsor Casey Wada was there, & I believe it was the same day Russ Paulk died at Sears Point. JU had a tough night.

  4. Either way what a great picture. Again, Thanks to Larry Lawrence for the opportunities he shares from the great Rider Files. Let us all be thankful for him.
