Here’s a story on the board track era I did for Readex, using their newspaper archives as research material. The company has digitized large volumes of historic newspapers making them searchable. It was interesting to see how the attitude of the journalists of the day evolved to board tracks. At first they seemed excited by the prospect, possibly spurred on by an ever-enthusiastic Jack Prince, who traveled the country selling the idea of his company building board tracks to driving groups and municipalities across the country. That journalistic enthusiasm turned to horror and eventually a call for an end to this type of racing for all the carnage it brought.
Nice read. Has anyone written a book on this, going into more depth?

American Racer by Stephen Wright covers the board track era photographically and with some good stories to go along with them, but nothing specifically on that era of racing as far as I know.
