Veteran racing photographer Brian J. Nelson caught the precise moment when AMA Pro SuperSport racer David Gaviria lost the front end of the LTD Y.E.S. Yamaha. Another rider had just missed his line and dug his knee slider into the dirt on the inside of the corner, kicking debris up on the racing surface right in the path of Gaviria, who had nowhere to go at this point.

Happening to capture crash photos is a very tough thing to do. I asked Brian what the chances were to catch that shot and he smiled and said one in 14. He’s refering to the number of turns on the course at Mid-Ohio, implying he would have captured the shot just as long as he was on the corner. I’d laugh at that statement coming from just about anyone other than Brian J.
