Peoria Short Track – Friday 17 June 2011
We had a Wisconsin weekend a couple of weeks ago, now it was Illinois’ turn. It’s been a long time since bikes have raced on this Short Track. I had always heard about racing here but it was before my time. So we traveled down there on Friday for the race that evening. It is a pretty good-size short track. There is a lot of banking and was very well prepped in spite of being wet.
Practice did not go the greatest for me as I was way out to lunch on gearing. I finally figured it out and won my Heat which had Brad Baker, Sammy Halbert, Justin Hittle , Mick Kirkness and Luke Gough in it—a tough one. Mine was the fastest Heat so I sat on the pole for the Main Event, after having made a last-minute tire change. I got a good jump but Matt Weidman had the point. I finally got by him and started to settle in. I heard the guys back there the whole time, but just ran my own race, staying smooth. I won the race but not by a huge gap, with Brad Baker coming in 2nd and Chris Carr in 3rd.
There was a huge crowd, but then again, it was Peoria where they love their motorcycles!
Peoria TT – Sunday, 19 June 2011
This has been an annual event ever since I have been in the Expert class. I have had a lot of success here at Peoria, especially at this June race. The track looked really wet as it had sprinkled some in the morning. It looked like it was going to get ripples and be rough as it has been before.
Practice went great. The track, surprisingly, was the best I think I ever rode it. I made a few minor changes, nothing big. Mine was the 1st Heat with Jimmy Wood, Mick Kirkness, Jake Mataya and Jeff Carver. I got a jump but Mataya got the hole shot. I had some power down the straight and was able to pass him going into turn one. I set sail from there, winning the second fastest Heat. Brad Baker had the fastest.
In the Main Event I got another good launch, but Robbie Pearson had the nod into the first corner. I ran behind Robbie for three laps, making a pass on him coming off turn two as he got a little Western on the outside of me. From then on I was able to run my own lines and my own race. I looked back a couple of times as I heard the guys right there coming off turn two. I did not seem to have a good line going into turn one, but everything else was good. With two laps to go Brad Baker got by Pearson and started to inch towards me. I wicked it back up and was able to maintain the gap to get the win. Baker came in 2nd and Pearson 3rd.
It was another great weekend for our team and we couldn’t be happier. Thanks to the whole Steve Nace Racing group and to all those who worked the track for making this a great race. And thanks to all the fans who support our sport. I look forward to seeing you at Lima.
‘til next time, Jammin’ Jared Mees # 9
