Is this any way to treat a Superbike?

Fellow riders said they saw Aaron Yates do things time and again on a Superbike that was supposed be impossible. Ben Spies told me there were times when in practice he just pulled in behind Yates to follow him and get a front-row seat watching some of the unbelievable things Yates could get by with on the bike. Here’s photo evidence from Road Atlanta in 2007 of Aaron’s sometimes non-conventional riding style. Notice the seriously compressed rear tire. That’s because Aaron is landing after jumping over a curb, oh and he jumped over the curb all the while doing a wheelie. Check out the contorted body position he’s in to make all this work. The AMA Pro Superbike Championship lost a highly entertaining rider when Aaron Yates ended up not racing this year.

  1. He’s by far my favorite racer in AMA Superbike… He would slide the bike like a flat tracker, drag elbows in the corner, and when he won at Mid-Ohio he would bunny hop the bike over the curbs in the esses… damn shame injuries took him do…wn last year. Yates would make the races exciting, the Superbike class is a little boring now without Yates, Mladin, and Spies. Guess I gotta wait till Eslick comes to Superbike now.

  2. I don’t miss him! I do not thnink I will ever forgive him for the flying kick to the fellow who was oh so unreasonable as to be lapped by the mighty impatient Yates at Daytona.

  3. Sometimes you’ve got to forgive things that happen in the heat of the battle. I’m sure Yates regrets what he did.

  4. In spite of the punt he made on Anthony Fania at Daytona over six years ago, Double A-ron still remains one of THE most physical and competitive riders that has ever graced an AMA Superbike podium. And yes, I’m sure he has some regrets over that very unflattering image that was portrayed over that incident.
Great shot LL, seeing him ‘berm it’ and spin the tire in those days, just like in this shot, still make me smile and leap for joy. It would be nice to think he can make it back next year after all he has gone through with his leg break. Dean had the x-rays up over a month ago and they were extrememly knarly–made me grimace!

  5. Arron & crew used to drive 100 miles one way to flat-track race XR-100’s etc. in Atlanta, in a tiny track in a parking lot. Great times.
