Mike Smith traveled to the WERA sprint race at Indianapolis Raceway Park circa 1988 hoping to cash in on Suzuki contingency bucks in C Superstock. Unfortunately for Smith, Kevin Rentzell also showed up to chase Yamabucks. During this era the Yamaha FZ600 was superior to the Suzuki GSX600 Katana and despite being at the peak of his form Smith could only manage to race close, but not stay ahead of Rentzell. Rentzell was also one of the top up-and-coming racers of the late 1980s. In addition to being an endurance racing champ with Dutchman Racing, Rentzell blew everyone away by scoring a podium finish in the Daytona 200 in 1989.

Kevin Rentzell leads Mike Smith in WERA C Superstock action at Indianapolis Raceway Park, perhaps in 1988. It was a close one, but Rentzell, racing a Yamaha FZ600, beat Smith and his Suzuki 600 Katana. (Larry Lawrence photo)
Its probably 1989 Larry, the year of the new generation FZR

Larry “Motorman” Brown was still building Kevin’s bikes at this point in his career and was the unsung hero involved with Kevin’s success.

I know Kevin was getting Michelins from Walt at about that time. I got a front from him and when I had Walt Mount it for me he wanted to know where I got it and how much Kevin charged me, since it was a test tire. When I told him Kevin gave it to me for nothing, he gave me a matching rear for free so I would have a matched set. Those were the new Hi-Sports.
