Robbie Petersen leads a tight battle in AMA 250 Grand Prix action at Road America in 1989. Petersen leads former World Championship GP star Alan Carter and Thomas Stevens on what I believe is the Team Viceroy Yamaha, a team owned by Kenny Roberts. Carter eventually moved to the front of this group and finished third in the race to John Kocinski and Rich Oliver. Stevens finished fourth and Petersen eighth.

Where’s Kocinski? Oh yeah, he lapped faster than the superbikes that year. I’m pretty sure my memory serves me correct when the report said kocinski could have won the superbike race on his tz250.

Hi Stephen. I’m sure Kocinski was gone at this point. He was pretty dominant and I think he did lap faster than the Superbikes a couple of times that year.
I did a poll and a related story on the Top 40 riders every year back with American Roadracing and Kocinski was the runaway winner in ’89.
