JARED MEES – ICE REPORT – Bloomington IL
Well, this was the last ICE Race for a while–at least until after Daytona. Although there is one more race scheduled at the end of March I am not sure if I will be able to make that one, depending on the flattrack schedule.
For the last few years this race at Bloomington has been our biggest ICE race of the year. We get a packed crowd and it seems the rider count gets bigger and bigger. I think this year there were 20 bikes and 37 quads. That’s a lot considering only 16 of each is a full show. Some really good riders came–the usual guys who did most of the series plus another 12 riders. I was in two pretty stacked Heat races, on the pole for the first one with Robbie Pearson and Adam Beldyga. I got the hole shot and led it to the finish.
In the next Heat I had Tommy McGrane, Jake Mataya and Brock Scwharzenbacher. All of these guys had won their first Heat race so the points were really tied up. But I rocketed out and led it start to finish. So I would be starting at the pole for the Main Event. There were a total of 36 races that night. The ICE crew did a great job keeping the ball rolling.
In the Main Event I lined up on pole and took off but suddenly a red flag came out–Kevin Anderson, Brandon Bergan and Robbie Pearson were all lying on the ice. On the re-start they all had to go back to the third row. Again I got the hole shot and we took off. I made three hard laps and looked over my shoulder and had a huge lead. I was able to just bring it in and out of the corner trying to not make a mistake or stall again like I did in Roanoke. The track was chewed and getting snowy quickly but I was able to bring it home for the win. It felt good to win there again in front of a big crowd.
I also clinched the Championship for the 3rd time, the 2nd in a row.
I could not have done it without my sponsors or without Craig Pickett. It was a fun season, flowing very nicely. Last year it was a little more busy but this year we get the whole month of February off. Now I can concentrate on getting my dirt trackers ready for Daytona and also ride more outdoor ice. Last year I remember doing a double header weekend, getting home Sunday, having driven all night, only to have to leave Tuesday for Savannah. I was a little on the burned-out side.
So, not much going on until Savannah/Daytona area racing in March. The Indy Show is coming up in a few weeks and it will be so nice to see most of my supporters and say hello to everyone. I look forward to seeing you all there if not at Daytona.
Thank you for the great indoor ice season, especially to the ICE organization for their great job. Things get better and better each year.
