Three Flat Trackers and a Koehler

A trio of famous AMA Grand National flat trackers and a local road racer battle at Road America in 1993 during the AMA Harley-Davidson 883 Road Race. Leading the way is a young up-and-comer Mike Hale (No. 32), followed by Milwaukee’s own Richard Koehler (No. 7), a road racing specialist who was a leading 883 road racer of the era, then Jay Springsteen (No. 49) and Ricky Graham (No. 64), two of the elite AMA Grand National riders of all time. Graham was in the middle of his record-setting Grand National season where he won six straight en route to the title. He and Springer were taking some time off from the Grand Nationals to do a little road racing. In the race among these four it was Hale coming out on top. Hale finished third (behind Scott Zampach and Shawn Higbee) coming out on top over fourth-place Graham, Koehler (5th) and Springsteen (6th).

Mike Hale (No. 32) leads Richard Koehler (No. 7), Jay Springsteen (No. 49) and Ricky Graham (No. 64) during the Harley-Davidson 883 Road Race before a massive crowd at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, on June 13, 1993. It marked perhaps the biggest crowd ever to attend a motorcycle race at Road America, since it was Harley-Davidson’s 90th anniversary celebration and visiting Road America to watch the 883s was part of the weekend’s programs.
