Here’s a rare photo I bet not too many people have. This is Mike Baldwin racing a Vance & Hines Suzuki GSXR750 in the AMA Superbike race at Road Atlanta in May of 1988. It marked Baldwin’s only AMA Superbike appearance on a Suzuki. He finished just off the podium in fourth. Bubba Shobert won the race ahead of Doug Polen and Doug Chandler. This was Baldwin’s final full season of racing. He was floating around a bit getting rides where he could. That year he made some GP appearances with a best finish of 10th at Laguna Seca.

What is Baldwin doing these days? I seldom hear of him, and by “seldom” I mean never. A lot of the folks that used to race, especially the more high profile guys, can still be tracked down, but I have no idea about Baldwin.

He’s working as a sales person at Danbury HD
. Still rides a snowmobile like it’s a 500 GP bike, extremely fast! Rides off road with a few of us and lives Pabst Blue Ribbon beer!

To be sure, this does indeed look like a one off ride. As evidenced by the “Honda” leathers. Vance and Hines sure has done an awful lot for AMA racing over the years…

I believe injuries kept him from reaching his potential in GP.

I still want to know why Mike said that Roberts firing him from the GP team was the best thing he coulda done. An LRRS racer knows him and ran into him this year. He told Mike he should write a book about his racing and Mike reportedly said nobody would be interested. I know all of us fans of AMA roadracing would be interested. I literally ran into him about 9 years ago while promoting a motorcycle event. He was wearing a HD hat and I believe was out on a Sunday morning ride with friends. He seemed uncomfortable to be recognized.
