Alphabet Battle

OK, admittedly only older New England road racers might get the title of this post, but it just might come into focus for the broader fan base when they realize that this is Dale Quarterley (32) battling Dave Sadowski (125) in the 1987 AMA Superbike race at Memphis Motorsports Park.

Both Quarterley and “Ski” grew up racing in the New England-based club AAMRR, or the Association of American Motorcycle Road Racers, affectionately known to its racers as the Alphabet Club (Get it, because of all the letters in the club’s abbreviation?) Quarterley and Sadowski were two of the best graduates in the history of AAMRR.

Quarterley won this battle of the Alphabet riders, scoring ninth, just ahead of Sadowski in 10th.

Oh yeah, that’s Kevin Schwantz, on the Yoshimura Suzuki, coming up behind Quarterley and Ski. Schwantz won the Memphis Superbike race.

  1. An interesting side story would be how AAMRR met it’s demise (something about insurance I remember). CCS started right around that time and quickly filled a gap. Not implying any connection between the two events…

  2. Larry…….I have always lived out west and know what Alphabet battle is referring to but then I’m a RR nut so there’s no hope for me.My first road race was at OCIR in Calif in 1968

  3. By 1986 when the GSXR Series started Dale was doing Superbike and endurance stuff and didnt dive into that series like Ski did.It would have been wild to see him in the mix back then.

  4. I agree it would be a great story to track the rise and fall of AAMRR. Many great racers came out of that organization and since so many Alphabet racers scored well in the Loudon National every year it gained a national reputation.

  5. Im surprised on the low number of comments on this one Larry,it would be a great story!I would love to see some early 1980s Bridgehampton pics.I remember going there for the first time and seeing GS 1000s wheeling over the hill behind the pits and down it at 100 mph. Those guys were nuts!

  6. Yeah, a big +1 on seeing some old Bridgehampton pics. I loved that place.
A few others that came out of that series (AAMMRR) were some of the greats like Richard Schlacter, and Mike Baldwin.
