Mike Smith beat a field deep with talent in the 1994 Daytona 600 Supersport final. (Dunlop press kit photo)
I put out a Quiz of the Day yesterday showing the results from a race and asking not only for class, but when and where the race was held.
To show you how sharp Rider Files readers are, the answer to what I thought was a pretty tough question was nailed by Brent Pierce exactly 36 minutes after I posted it. And Brent’s a flat track buff.
It was indeed the 1994 Daytona 600 Supersport race.
Excellent job Brent!
Shortly after Brent’s answer a flood of correct responses came pouring in.
What an interesting race though with Honda’s Mike Smith taking the victory over Steve Crevier on the factory Kawasaki and Jamie James on a Vance & Hine Yamaha — three different factories on the podium. And you had so much talent in that top 10 with Rothman, Hale, Barney and Pridmore. And how about Jim Leslie getting up there and mixing it up with the big dogs?
Then to have someone of the caliber of Colin Edwards finishing ninth? Pretty amazing. Though to be fair, Edwards had very little experience on a 600 Supersport bike, being primarily a 250 Grand Prix and then Superbike pilot.
Sander Avant pointed out in his comment that Cycle News gave a pretty good clue with its coverage of Edwards testing the Tech 3 Moto2 bike yesterday. Edwards on a 600 was exactly what prompted the trivia question.
I’m happy and amazed at the collective knowledge of the readers of this website.
Jim L. was real fast Larry,he rode endurance with us and put the 1100 up front when the rest of us were quicker on the 600…..:)

I remembered when Colin Edwards raced in the states, and when Mike Hale raced for Honda. That’s when I realized it couldn’t of been any time after 1995, then I read the CycleNews Article about Colin Edwards testing the Moto 2 Tech 3 bike about him not racing a 600 since Daytona 1994. I guess I spent too much of my time reading racing magazines and watching MotoWorld as a young teenager… lol
