(News Release)
From 2009 AMA Grand National Champ Jared Mees
Prescott AZ – It was the last race of the season for the GNC series. I knew, coming into the last race, that winning the Championship was still a possibility. But things would have to fall my way. I really wanted to win this race. It has been a couple of years now since I won a National and I was itching for that. Felt good through qualifying but once again the times did not show it. Oh well, this whole year has not been good for me when it comes to qualifying times.
I was in the 1st Heat race. Got a lousy start and picked my way through the pack. Got into 2nd but PJ Jacobsen was a good ways in front. I tried to reel him in and was gaining but then slipped a bit and he got away again. I charged on and on the white flag lap was behind him by .6 of a second. I came around for the checkered and won it by .001 of a second. Man, it was close!! That set me up for fast time and the pole for the Main Event and the Dash.
At the Dash I grabbed the start and led the first lap, with Sam Halbert, PJ and I going back and forth. At the finish it was Sammy, then me and then PJ with a very tight margin.
For the Main Event it was another hole shot. Jake Johnson came up to play and for the first part of the race we went back and forth. I got sucked into the back of Jake due to the draft and almost fell off. I went back a few spots but made a comeback. It was between Sammy and Jake for a little while and then I was able to get back in the mix. On the white flag lap Jake got by. Going into turn three I almost drafted by him but wasn’t able to make the pass. I came off turn four and Jake went to the bottom of the groove, which was a smart move, and I had to go inside of him due to the run I had. As I was going by my rear tire started to spin up and I lost my drive, losing the race to Jake by .004 of a second, putting me in 2nd place.
In the Combined Overall Championship I tied for 2nd with Joe Kopp and lost the # 1 plate to Jake. Congratulations to Jake who was well worthy of it. I was glad to see a good friend like him get it, but next year I am going to go after it to get it back.
Stockton CA – For the next couple of weeks I am out here in CA doing some outlaw races. I just finished racing the Stockton Mile in Stockton CA. It was a very good payout race. Things went well for the first part of the day, in practice at least. I felt good and the bike felt fast. In the Heat race I got a horrible start and on the first lap went down hard, crashing the bike and getting pretty bruised up and sore. The bike was damaged and couldn’t make the restart. I had to come through a Semi which I won.
For the Main Event I was on the back row, got a decent jump and sort of rode timidly for the first few laps since the track was coming apart. They did the best they could on the track with what they have—it was just one of those deals where sand just doesn’t pack. I worked my way up the 3rd and stayed there for most of the race. I didn’t think it was too bad since I got so banged up in the Heat race. I am still pretty sore. It was my first time this season bailing off, I believe. Not a good way to end the season.
We have one more race to go, at Willow Springs CA. Eddie Mulder’s race. Am looking forward to getting something going there.
Thanks to all for a great season. Am looking forward to 2011 already, feel like we just got going.
Thanks to all flattrack race fans and my sponsors, Jammin’ Jared Mees
