Thierry van den Bosch and Doug Henry each won a round of the AMA Supermoto Championship during the 2005 series’ opening weekend at the Briggs & Stratton Motorplex at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.
The then two-time Supermoto World Champion van den Bosch, of France, who was 30 at the time, showed off his rain riding skills in race one by pulling away to a convincing 6.6-second victory over local favorite Ben Carlson. Germany’s Jurgen Kunzel was third, giving KTM a sweep of the podium finishers.
Henry, of Torrington, Conn., won the second race with a dramatic last lap pass on van den Bosch on a drying track.
Van den Bosch, arguably the greatest Supermoto racer of all time, became the first rider to lead both the World and AMA Supermoto Championships simultaneously.
