Report from the Champ – Jared Mees

(News Release)

Bakersfield CA – Kern County Fair

The Champ on his West Coast swing.

This was the 6th Bakersfield race. One of my friends and supporters, Digger Helm’s hometown race. This year it was bigger than ever for the track, fans, riders and purse. 51 pro riders came out to play and go for the $18,000 plus the Lucy Helm Caraway Dash for Cash purses. I have won this race every time I entered it, always with a solid motorcycle owned and prepared by Ed Steffen. I was riding the same machine again.

There were some tough competitors out for this “outlaw race”. When a race is paying more money to win than a Grand National pays, you can’t blame them for coming out. Among the guys who did were current Singles Champ Henry Wiles, Stevie Bonsey, Jimmy Wood, Horizon Award winner Briar Bauman, Mike Rush, Sammy and Jethro Halbert, Mikey Avila, Brad Baker, Luke Gough, Chad Cose and Kyl Kolkman. This was a Mini-National!!

In this race there are 8 Heats and you have to win your Heat to go straight to the Main and to the Dash for Cash. Winning your Heat does not even secure you a front row start since only the 6 fastest get to start on the front row. I was in the 2nd Heat race. I got a good jump and led it start to finish, putting me into the Dash. I had the fastest time putting me on the pole. I got the hole shot and rode hard to win the Dash.

The pressure was on for the Main Event. A lot of guys appeared to be going well. Jimmy Wood napped the start on me and he and I went at it side by side for the first 8 laps of the 20-lap Main Event–rubbing so slightly. It was hard to believe that in this tight little short track we were able to ride each other so cleanly. He was riding the high line and I was running the low line, going back and forth. Finally the track started to come to me and I was able to get a little on Jimmy and make a complete pass. I rode hard until the end to put a gap between us and win my 5th in a row Bakersfield. Man, it really felt good. It was probably the most fun I had all year racing. No pressure, riding hard with your buddy for some good cash is awesome.

Hats off to all the riders, fans and series sponsors. A big Thank You to Eddie and Jody Mulder for having this series; to Digger Helm for all his support making this thing as big as it is; to Gene and Gail Cummings for all their hospitality and providing transportation; and especially to Ed Steffen for letting me once again ride his bike.

We have a weekend off and then we are off to Prescott Az. for the last GNC race of the season! Till then, thanks to Everyone!!!, Jammin’ Jared Mees #1/21

Special Thanks goes out to: Ed Steffen for a Awesome Race Bike!!!
