Scott Russell came out of Georgia in 1986 as a raw, but blazingly fast novice racer. He rapidly grew to become one of the fastest road racers in America in just a few years. How did Russell go from beginning novice WERA sprint racer to AMA Supersport winner in the span of less than two years? Russell credits his hours of endurance racing as the reason he climbed the ladder so quickly. Russell raced for Solmax Racing and logged literally dozens of hours of seat time per season with the endurance squad. I’ll never forget a rain-soaked Memphis Motorsports Park and Russell on the Solmax Yamaha FZR1000 power sliding the bike out of a turn lap after lap with amazing consistency. By racing under all kinds of conditions during his endurance career Russell also became one of the best rain riders America ever produced.

Scott Russell logged countless hours in the saddle of the Solmax Racing endurance machine, honing his skills to a razor edge. WERA endurance racing helped Russell go from rank novice to AMA National winner in the span of two years. (Larry Lawrence photo)
