Vance & Hines Yamaha riders Jamie James (2) and Thomas Stevens (11) battle late in the 1991 Road America Superbike round. James held off his teammate to earn his second-career AMA Superbike victory. While James won the battle at Elkhart Lake that year, Stevens went on to win the war earning the AMA Superbike Championship by a mere two points over Muzzy Kawasaki’s Scott Russell.

You might be thinking of BBoz who won the title riding for Honda in ’98 without a race win. His first win came a year later at Brainerd.
