It’s only early August, but the Parts Canada Superbike Championship wrapped up this weekend at Atlantic Motorsports Park in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia. It was a notable season in that Jordan Szoke finished the campaign undefeated. The victory gave the Brantford, Ont. rider a perfect season of seven race wins from seven starts on his Waznie Racing Honda CBR1000RR. No other rider has ever accomplished the feat in the 30-year history of the national Superbike championship.

It was a record seventh Canadian Superbike title for Szoke and his fifth Parts Canada Superbike crown in a row.

Now that the Canadian Series is complete hopefully we’ll see Szoke and some of the other Canadian riders racing in the American Superbike Championship at VIR, New Jersey Motorsports Park and the season finale at Barber Motorsports Park.

Joe Kopp won the Hagerstown (Md.) Half-Mile Saturday night extending his points lead in the AMA Pro K&N Filters Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com. It was a great three-way battle between Kopp, Kenny Coolbeth and Jared Mees – all three Grand National Champs.

Kopp now has a solid 18-point lead in the Grand National standings over Jake Johnson and Sammy Halbert. Kopp is trying to win his second AMA Grand National Championship 10 years after he won his first title.

Tragedy struck at VIR this weekend at a WERA event. Robert Gette died following a crash.

According to the Winston-Salem Journal, Gette, 38, of Charlotte, N.C., was involved in a chain-reaction crash during a race. Police said the crash occurred when one racer lost control and his motorcycle overturned. Gette swerved to avoid a collision and his motorcycle also overturned. As Gette was trying to stand up, he was struck by a 12-year-old competitor from Sutton, W.Va.

Our sympathies go out to Gette’s family and our best wishes to the other riders injured in the accident.
