1987 Road America AMA Superbike Start

Riders launch their motorcycles at the start of the AMA Superbike round at Road America in June of 1987. Wayne Rainey (6) lofts the front wheel of his factory Honda. This was the year of the epic Wayne Rainey/Kevin Schwantz championship battle. On this day Schwantz (34) won the battle. Ultimately Rainey won the AMA Superbike title that season by nine points over Schwantz. From left to right in the photo are John Ashmead (37), Bubba Shobert (67), Dan Chivington (53), Doug Polen (23), Ottis Lance (14), Rueben McMurter (24), Wayne Rainey (6), Doug Chandler (10) and Kevin Schwantz (34).

  1. There are a lot of national and world championships in this picture! By the way, Ottis “Otter” Lance is still racing these days, and still quite fast. He’s a regular with the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) in Texas and Oklahoma.
