Steve Crevier was a veteran of over a decade of AMA professional road racing when he finally broke through and won the Pro Honda Oils 600 Supersport Championship in 1998. Crevier won the Mid-Ohio event and scored four additional podium finishes.
The Supersport Series was packed with talent in 1998, perhaps the most talent-filled season of the series. There were seven winners in the series that year – Crevier, Doug Chandler, Nicky Hayden, Miguel Duhamel, Ben Bostrom, Aaron Yates, and Larry Pegram.
Crevier, racing for Yoshimura Suzuki, edged out Kawasaki’s Chandler by 13 points to win the championship. Third in the series was Eric Bostrom, followed by Nicky Hayden, Ben Bostrom, Jason Pridmore, Tommy Hayden, Larry Pegram, Steve Rapp and Aaron Yates rounding out the top ten.
Not a bad group of racers Crevier topped that year.
is my memory correct that the title went down to the final race in Vegas?

Yes the championship went down to the final race. It was between Crevier and Chandler.
