Capirossi Crash in Sports Illustrated

Sports Illustrated came in the mail today with one of my heroes, John Wooden, on the cover. Inside I was surprised to see a two-page spread photo of Loris Capirossi crashing at Mugello.

On one hand I’m happy to see anything motorcycle related in SI. On the other hand it ticks me off that, to the current staff at Sports Illustrated our sport is reduced to only being worthy of coverage via a spectacular crash shot.

When was the last time SI profiled a GP star? Why didn’t they do a feature on Ben Spies’ phenomenal World Superbike season?

Until SI starts considering motorcycle racing a legitimate sport worth covering it will always be lacking in my eyes.

  1. I cancelled SI a looooooong time ago; however, I’ll renew my SI subscription when SI prints a two-page color spread of a spectacular curling crash. I’m pretty sure I’m going to be waiting a looooooong time, though…

  2. The last article that SI published about motorcycle racing that really was worth reading was the one about Gary Scott, quitting the factory H-D team, carrying the #1 plate as a privateer and getting beat in the last race of the season and losing the championship to Jay Springsteen. http://tinyurl.com/252dj2p
Great to see you @ Springfield. Drop a line, I’d like to send you some pics. Big fan of the Rider Files btw.

  3. Whoa! Thanks for that link Art. Yeah Sam Moses came out of motorcycle journalism and made it all the way to SI. When he was gone that was about all she wrote for motorcycle racing coverage.
