Mechanics in motocross play an important roll even during the races. Not only are they standing by with tools, goggles, etc in case their rider needs help, but they also provide motivation and information to their riders during the motos. Here’s a photo from the Hangtown National in 2004 showing the view the mechanics have during the motos. The riders shown in the photo are Kawasaki’s James Stewart and Broc Hepler with Suzuki.
