John Ashmead leads a gaggle of riders entering the International Horseshoe during the 1987 Daytona 200 by Arai. Others braking for the horseshoe include David Strobel (305), Keith Pinkstaff (21), Rodney Farris (351), Doug Chandler (10), Doug Chancey (335) and others. Wayne Rainey won the race that year. Of this group it was Ashmead, on a Honda, coming out on top taking the checkered flag in sixth. Two years later Ashmead would win the race on this same race bike.

I was Dave Strobel’s pitboard guy during that race. We gave signboards in the tri-oval down by the flagman at the edge of the track is those days.

That had to be sort of tough for the rider to read going top close to top speed.

Somebody just sent this article over to me, very cool, haven’t seen any of this stuff in 35 years.
Thanks for the memories,
