Terry Hampton – Indianapolis Raceway Park (1987)

Terry Hampton was a leading privateer AMA Superbike racer of the mid-1980s. Racing a HRC-kitted Honda VF750 in 1984, Hampton scored six top-10 Superbike results and finished the year ranked 10th. The Indianapolis native did mainly Yamaha contingency club racing in 1986, but he came back in ’87 to contest a limited number of AMA Supersport races on this Honda CBR600. His best result that season was 10th at Road Atlanta. The thing I remember most about this bike was Hampton rigged up tubing for his fuel to flow through a box of dry ice. The idea was that cold gasoline made for better combustion. This is a photo of Hampton racing his Honda in a WERA race at Indianapolis Raceway Park in April of 1987.
