Cam’s NSR Rear Tire Mystery

Can someone please explain this photo? It’s Cam Roos racing his stunning Honda NS250R at Roebling Road at a WERA event in July of 1986. What I cannot figure out for the life of me is why the rear tire on the NSR is catching air – all this with the bike well leaned over. If you look closely there’s a good half-inch to an inch between the bottom of the tire on Cam’s bike and the tarmac. His finger is on the brake lever, but he doesn’t seem to be applying the brake. Could the rear tire be chattering this badly? Was there a minor bump on the track that caused the rear tire to catch air? Regardless of the cause it’s a cool photo because 1) it’s Cam Roos, 2) it’s an NSR and 3) the rear tire is off the ground while the bike is leaning into a corner.

  1. I’ve looked – I don’t have any pictures of myself that I’ve found there to corroborate my recollection of the tree line. But if this is in fact where I think it is, you needed to be closer to the grass there to avoid some stutter bumps which were perhaps cause by the cars. Not that I’m second guessing the skill of someone who clearly flew through there (or you’d have some crash photos with this) – but I have run 14’s like clockwork, so I’m just tossinng out an opinion in an effort to lend a reasonable possibility to your photo.
