Hughes Dragging His Knee in the Wet

In looking through some old negatives this one really caught my eye. It was a rare WERA race at Loudon in July of 1986. It was raining and most of the riders were understandably tiptoeing through this turn. One frame on the strip of negatives immediately stood out since the rider was leaning so far. I scanned it and sure enough, it’s Chris Hughes dragging his knee though the turn on full wets on his Yamaha FZ750. We’ve talked about how slick Summit Point and Blackhawk were in the rain. It looks like the old Loudon had some traction in the rain; at least it did for Hughes.

Loudon 1

Sensible rider.

Loudon 2

More sensible riders.

  1. Hi Tony! Been a while…

I did my WERA rider school that weekend. I don’t remember Loudon being particularly slippery in the wet.

  2. Geo! Hey buddy,
Loudon had banked corners, they held you in.There is not another track like that anywhere that has tight banked turns like that.
