The Outside Pass

Andy Fenwick (10) of CIA Racing attempts an outside pass on Ken Essex (446) riding the Action Honda entry during a WERA Endurance race in the late 1980s. The outside pass in road racing is one of the trickiest and most rewarding things a rider can do. Fenwick must have been on loan to CIA from the Human Race Team. I have no idea where this photo was taken. Judging from the sandy terrain in the foreground it might be Roebling Road near Savannah, Georgia.

Ken Essex (446) and Andy Fenwick (10) race two abreast through a corner during a WERA Endurance race. Essex rode the Action Honda 600 Hurricane while Fenwick was on a CIA Racing Yamaha FZR600. (Larry Lawrence photo)

  1. Nice shot Larry. I think you’re right with it being at Roebling. We finished 2nd in middleweight superbike in that race and 3rd for the season. I was riding the Action Honda Suzuki CBR600f that season with Mike Grissom and Scott Elaqua.

That is not the only time that Andy has ever made an outside pass on me. It helps when he knows I’m not going to run him off the outside at the exit and I know that he isn’t going to chop off my front wheel.

I totally agree that Andy could run side by side with you through any corner without fear of a bad move on your part. I remember your riding style very clearly. Clean lines, very smooth and quick.

  2. I must have already moved to California by then, but I remember Savannah fondly. Bob Rentzell crashed me in this same turn several years earlier…

  3. This is a cool website, glad I (my son) found this site. That is Andy riding my bike, which is a FZR400. I don’t remember Andy riding it at Roebling Road, but I do know for sure at Pocono.
