The Findlay Flyer Flogs It

Here’s a classic press kit shot of Steve Morehead – aka The Findlay Flyer – broad sliding what looks to be a single-cylinder machine ahead of Terry Poovey at an unknown race. If this was a short track national it’s likely Santa Fe Park in the suburbs of Chicago, one of the few Short Track grand Nationals in the 1980s. The surface looks so smooth that it brings up another possibility that this is a paved track or indoor short track. I’m certain one of our numerous Grand National experts will look at this photo and recognize the track.

Steve Morehead broad sliding his No. 42 machine entering a turn. Terry Poovey can be seen just behind Morehead.

  1. I’m with ya on the Hamburg 600cc national 1/2 mile….but I believe the year to be ’90 or ’91 based on Moreheads leathers…in ’88 i think he had white top and green pants,KK leathers….in ’89 was the Sponseller Honda year he had white top, kinda gold pants…., by ’92 he had gone black…….in between then, in 90-91 he wore the grey on grey set pictured here.

  2. i got bored with football and dug thru the old CN closet and confirmed this Bert Shepard pic was taken at the ’91 Hamburg 600 National…according to the article Chris took the lead from Morehead coming out of four only to low-side going into one. Morehead won the race over Poovey and Wink Freitas..
