Racing the Future World Champ

Nicky Hayden (29) leads Doug Carmichael (34) and Marcello del Giudice (99) in a WERA Formula 3 race at Indianapolis Raceway Park in 1992. Little did Carmichael and del Giudice know at the time that they were racing a future World Champion. I’m not sure what the WERA age limit was at the time, but I think Nicky (or more accurately Earl, Nick’s dad) may have been stretching the rules a bit racing in this event since Nick was just 11-years-old.

  1. I raced that weekend, pitted across from the kid and his very scruffy looking dad…
…what a future that kid went on to.

For sure the Hayden’s lived, ate and breathed racing.

That was so amazing to find out your grandfather won the Indy 500 twice. Your family has quite a racing heritage.
