Who was the most underrated road racer of the early 1990s? A good case could be made for Streator, Illinois rider Bob Sandy. Sandy came up and quickly became a leading WERA racer. In 1991 and ’92 he hit a limited number of AMA Nationals and showed what a speedy privateer could do on sheer talent. Sandy scored a slew of top-10 finishes, including finishing runner-up to factory Kawasaki’s Thomas Stevens at Texas World in 1992 and another podium finish at Topeka in ’91. Sandy finished ranked fifth in the 1991 AMA 750 Supersport standings in spite of only running at about half the races that season.
