Mike Elmore and his Honda RS500

Mike Elmore racing his incredible Honda RS500 at a WERA Regional at Indianapolis (O’Reilly) Raceway Park sometime in the mid-1980s. Mike’s RS was just one of the full-on GP bikes floating around WERA’s North Central Region at the time. His along with Boonie Knott’s Suzuki RG500 and Jim Knipp’s Yamaha YZR500 made for some entertaining WERA F1 races.

  1. If memory serves me (don’t count on it!) Mike rode a Honda RS250. I believe he still lives in Scottsdale, AZ and worked for America West Airlines as a route analyst when he left Indianapolis in the late 1980’s. I frequently traveled to the GM Proving Grounds in Mesa, AZ and would meet up with Mike and his wife and reminisce about the roadracing days of yore. We traded Christmas cards up until a couple years ago. Thanks for the memories Larry! GS

  2. It’s the 500 (triple). Two exhaust pipes under the seat and the third below the rear break. I’m guessing it’s the privateer version. So, RS500 and not the factory NS500.
