This was the way Scott Russell looked in 1988. He won his very first AMA national road race that year in AMA 750 Supersport at his home track of Road Atlanta. Russell would go on to become one of the greatest road racers America ever produced, winning the Daytona 200 a record five times, becoming AMA and World Superbike Champion and Suzuka 8 Hour winner.

Great Pic! Scott Russle in 1988! Young fearless and hungry. He must have been a freaking beast! I was staring right at him in the International Horshoe in Daytona when he had his famous “Superman” moment while trying to get past on the inside line. He went from a lap down to winning by a lap. Foggy never knew what hit him. Best he coud come up with at the podium was that he “never really liked Daytona”. Most amazing come from behind win I’ve ever seen live or otherwise.

I remember that Daytona well. One lucky photographer caught the crash and the photo ended up on the cover of Cycle World.
