Revvin’ Kevin

“Revvin’ Kevin” Rentzell hustles a what looks like a Yamaha FZR400 around the track at Gateway International Raceway across the river from St. Louis, in a WERA National Endurance race during the late-1980s. Rentzell, of Chattanooga, Tenn., was one of the top WERA and CCS racers during the 1980s. He shocked the AMA Pro regulars when he scored third in the 1989 Daytona 200.

  1. Nice pic Larry! I remember Kevin stuffing me entering a turn in the back section there in a 1989 endurance race.He threw it in the turn and it looked like the whole bike jumped to the outside of the track.Next thing i knew he was GONE!:)

  2. Rick,

Good story. As you know Kevin was famous for stuffing other riders going into turns. Doing it in endurance races was overkill, but that’s the way Kevin rode. Scott Russell did the same thing when he raced with Solmax Racing. It’s almost like they used the endurances races as practice for what they were going to do in the sprint races the next day. Thanks for commenting.

  3. After working with Kevin for several years and endurance racing with KAYO racing I can assure you Larry that is exactly what Kevin did during the endurance race,he rode WFO all the time.I remember in ’86 or ’87 I think, we were at Daytona for the ^ hour endurance race in the spring. We(I)made a wrong pit stop estimate on fuel milage at the beginning of the race and Kevin was left out in the infield out of fuel(my bad).It took a few minutes to get him back in to fuel up and get back out on the 1100 Suzuki,we were 3 laps down at this point.Kevin went back out as a madman determined to make up the lost time.By the end of the race he not only lapped the field 3 times he took the lead!…and on the last lap the the throttle cable on the Mikuni flat slides broke leaving him stranded once again(imagine keeping the throttle pinned as hard as you can at Daytona for 6 hours!)and we got 2nd that day in that race and because of Kevin and his riding ability,I am sure many were stuffed that day!

BTW great shot of him on the 400 Larry!I did a head for him for that 400 but do not know if it was on it for this race………

Keep’em comming Larry!I love what you do here.I have always been a fan of yours and more of one today!
