Kevin Schwantz (34) and Wayne Rainey (6) battle at Road America in 1987. The rivalry between Schwantz /Rainey and Suzuki/Honda was intense. Schwantz won most of the battles, but it was Rainey who ultimately walked away with the title. (Larry Lawrence photo)
Man, those WERE the good old days, weren’t they, especially with the constant p..sing contest going on now with the Damaged Motorcycle Guys. And after reading John’s articles on RR World the last few weeks, what is happening at Topeka as we speak, and the fall out from the economic meltdown, well, we obviously have a situation that is un-paralled anywhere as far as our beloved AMA/US/DMG Superbike Series is concerned.
And we thought the AMA messed up a bunch. I’m about ready to crawl over that fence we have been bordering on the last 12-18 months….
God Bless you man! And please keep up the great stuff here. We need the morale boost! HA!

Does anyone have the pics of Schwantz’s Superbike RZ350?
How about with the FJ600 with the mufflers worn through from scrapping

Thats a cool shot. Can’t beat the look of film!
Was this a slide or reg film ?

Slide. I agree, there was just something almost artistic about film. The latest generation of pro DSLRs produce great results, but to me until the last three years or so, the look of film was still king.

This was the first Superbike race I ever attended. Kevin would get Wayne in the tight stuff, but coming out of Canada Corners Wayne would pass him a pull away going up the hill. Kevin finally gapped him enough that Wayne couldn’t use his horsepower advantage! I was a Schwantz fan immediately after this race! Kevin should have won this year. If only he would have kept it on two wheels at Laguna!
Great pic, Thanks!
