1986 Loudon Classic

The start of the 1986 Loudon Classic AMA Formula One National.

The front row is Wayne Rainey (6), Gary Goodfellow (499), Randy Renfrow (96), Kork Ballington (99) and Marco Greco (165). Note that Goodfellow is the only Superbike on a front row of 500cc GP bikes. On the second row you can see Dan Chivington (53) and Ed Hinton (182).

  1. Great pic Larry,the GSXRs look gigantic next to the RS 500s.Edgar Hinton was a super fast Loudon regular who was lucky to escape a high speed trip into Loudons infield pond after an oil filter failure.

    Yeah the Gixxer does look massive compared to the GP bikes, but it seems Goodfellow rode the wheels off the thing to put it in the front row. I’d heard that Hinton story before. Wasn’t it something like, he was knocked out and submerged in the pond when a couple of other racers pulled off and came to his rescue?

Yes im pretty sure that Edgar was out cold and under water.Sliding off in turn three on a big bore gsxr meant sliding on baseball size stones for a bit than major air and down an embankment into the pond at somewhere around 100 mph.Edgar was a tough guy though,the type that got right back to action without a fuss!:)
