Suzuki GSXR Cup ‘88

This was always one of my favorite photos because of the amazing amount of up-and-coming talent represented here.

This is a Suzuki GSXR Cup race at the 1988 WERA GNF. You’ve got Mike Harth (88) leading the pack into turn one with Scott Russell (22), David Sadowski (4), Britt Turkington (280), Scott Zampach (behind Sadowski), Kurt Hall (behind Russell) and I think Mark Bougas (behind Zampach).

I’m not sure who No. 11 is (maybe Paul Bray) or bikes 138 or 171.   (Update: Rick “The Master” Burdick responed to tell us that 138 was Cal Rayborn III and 171 is Joe Pittman. You da’ man Rick. Thanks.)

Please add comments if you know the other riders.

That was a golden era in WERA racing.

  1. Motorman,

From looking at the negatives I think this may have been a heat race, because I have another start shot with Polen and a bunch of other fast Suzuki Cup guys. I’d have to dig through a lot of stuf to find out who won this race.

    Thanks
    Larry

    1. Larry i was on first row 2nd wave due to broken leg mid season, Polen started behind me on last row due to his crash under bridge in heat race

  2. Great shot. Mike would have Hippie put an aftermarket pipe and a slick on the rear and I would ride that bike in the AMA nationals. We then would split what ever purse I was able to bring in.
