The Lima (Ohio) AMA Grand National is this Saturday, June 27th at the Allen County Fair. Lima has become on of the premier events on the AMA Grand National calendar and the track shows, as Chris Carr puts it, which riders have big balls (sorry Shayna and Nichole). This year is the 25th Anniversary edition.
The track surface is made up of deep, crushed limestone and watching the early practice sessions is something not to be missed. Riders try to get through the turns controlling their bike’s arch via the throttle and at the same time trying to fight the thing from washing out the plowing front end. It’s wild!
Last year Henry Wiles very nearly gave Aprilia its first Grand National win, but Joe Kopp nipped Wiles by a half-bike length.
This place packs them in and nearly all the fans ride their motorcycles to the track. To me Lima ranks just behind Peoria and Springfield as must-see Grand National races. If you’re anywhere in the area you should try to make a trip of it.
